Outdoor Adventure Program
Philosophy/Purpose
The philosophy/purpose of the program is to establish a passion, appreciation, and respect for the outdoors, expose students to healthy activities and is designed to offer outdoor recreational - leadership opportunities for all students of Grinnell High School, at risk or high achieving, regardless of socioeconomic or previous outdoor experience.
Through outdoor recreation/education, students learn to step out of their comfort zone and gain more self-confidence. Participants build meaningful relationships more easily than they can in a traditional classroom setting and the adventure of the outdoors helps to form strong bonds. In the outdoor adventure program, we try to help students make connections between the classroom and the real world.
Students have the opportunity to be introduced to new skills, which can be applied toward lifelong pursuits. They gain better awareness of their surroundings, of each other and themselves. Participants develop the skills to re-create their experience with other groups. They learn to stop and reflect on the learning process, become competent at transferring experiential learning into basic terms, and figure out how to apply that process to other situations.
This program is perfect for students who love to expand their horizons and go above and beyond a normal classroom setting. The students are provided with the opportunity to develop leadership, growth, and team building by actively getting involved in the learning experience.
